Publicist/ Public Relations

Ever wonder why we never see Gloucester or Rockport or Cape Ann in the magazines?  Rockport, ME was just deemed one of the prettiest towns in New England.  What about Rockport, MA?

That's what a publicist does.  They will get our name out there.  They come up with unique story ideas for an area and then get them out to the journalists.   And boy, do we have some stories.

Bob Hastings from the CACC used them in Rockland ME.  He would like to use one here.  But, the budget for this year has already been allocated.  He has said for $25,000 we can get a part-time publicist.  Someone he has worked with before.  I would like tot get some more information on this but I think this would be a good goal for us to work towards.

Remember the couple of years after the Perfect Storm came out and what that brought to the area?

Any thoughts on this?, any experience?  BTW, who does Woodman's use?  Their name is everywhere.

I think Gloucester and Cape Ann do make a number of magazines. North of Boston has a whole binder with press articles and magazine articles that come out on places on the North Shore. That's why it's a good idea to work with them when they have press writers coming through. The Chamber use to keep press clippings, as well, and send them out but I'm not sure if they still do. I think many of us are just not aware of the publicity as they are in papers/magazines we do not see.

I'm sure that North of Boston is doing the best it can given its resources, but scanning the travel magazines and websites one cannot find Gloucester, Rockport or Cape Ann since the "Perfect Storm". It is obvious that more must be done in this highly competitive era. We need a professionally led, continuing PR campaign to get our message out to the traveling public. I am personally pledging $500 annually towards hiring a PR firm for this purpose and challenge the industry as well as the city of Gloucester and town of Rockport, who are about to reap a windfall of tax revenue from tourism, to join me and fund this effort. Thanks to the Chamber for the leadership in suggesting this approach.
